"SANTA CLARA, Calif., January 15, 2003 - Intel Corporation today announced new tools to help software developers analyze and optimize Linux*-based applications, enabling them to take full advantage of the Intel® Pentium® 4 and Intel® Xeon™ processors. The Intel® VTune™ Performance Analyzer 1.0 for Linux is the first fully Linux-native performance analysis tool from Intel supporting Linux-based applications.
This new version complements the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 6.1, an analysis tool for Microsoft Windows*-based applications with remote support for Linux. Intel´s extensive knowledge of the processor enables it to deliver tools, such as the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer, that provide extensive insights into how software utilizes processor resources.
The Intel VTune Performance Analyzer identifies lines of code in an application that consume excessive amounts of processor resources. Developers can use this analysis to quickly identify and remove potential performance bottlenecks by focusing on those specific lines of code, resulting in faster time to market with new applications.
Types of applications that can achieve enhanced performance include commercial, transaction-oriented computing, computationally intensive financial, engineering and scientific applications, digital media, games and multimedia.
Today, Intel also introduced the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer Driver Kit, which includes open source drivers for the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer, allowing developers to use the tool with unsupported Linux distributions and customized kernels. This kit is part of Intel´s continuing commitment to standards and the open source effort, such as working with the Open Source Development Network.
"We have been very pleased with the reception to the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 6.1 with its remote Linux support by the Linux community earlier this year," said Jon Khazam, general manager of the Software Products Division in Intel´s Software and Solutions Group. "In response to customers´ requests, we have now added a completely native Linux edition that offers developers even more flexibility in tuning their applications for higher levels of performance."
The new Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 1.0 for Linux offers more flexibility and convenience for Linux users through a command line interface, new scripting capability, and "flow of control" analysis previously only available for Windows-based applications. The new tool features a Pack and Go option wherein the results from the Linux server can be transferred back to a Windows-based system for further analysis with the Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 6.1.
The Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 1.0 for Linux will be showcased from January 22-24, 2003 at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in New York. The Intel VTune Performance Analyzer 1.0 for Linux will be available for the suggested list price of $699. The tool will be available next month from Intel and resellers worldwide for download and on CD-ROMs. More information is available at www.intel.com/software/products..."
